LuraWave image compression technology

 

LuraWave’s wavelet technology allows for rich content and high resolution at a fraction of the original size.  LuraWave, (file extension *.LWF), provides much higher image quality and a smaller file size compared to the conventional JPEG format.  The JPEG format uses the Discrete Cosine Transformation (DCT), which compresses images in 8x8 blocks and results in visible artifacts at high compression rates.  LuraWave compression is based on wavelet algorithms—mathematical expressions that encode an image in a continuous stream as a series of resolution levels of the entire image; thereby avoiding the tendency toward visible artifacts that result from JPEG’s DCT division of an image into discrete compression blocks. 

 

LuraWave’s wavelet technology allows for richer content and higher resolution at a fraction of the original size.  Unlike JPEG, which usually displays an image from top to bottom, with LuraWave images can be displayed progressively where a low-resolution version of the entire image appears very quickly and then the resolution improves as the bitstream comes in.  If the bitstream is interrupted, viewers still see a version of the entire image and the rest of the image can later be transmitted.
