Richard Holbrooke, US envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, has died after undergoing emergency heart surgery.
The 69-year-old collapsed last week and underwent a 20-hour operation to repair a tear in his aorta.
He had been in a critical condition in George Washington University Hospital after the procedure.
The Washington Post reports his last words to the surgeon and family were: "You've got to stop this war in Afghanistan."
President Obama paid tribute to his colleague, saying: "There are millions of people around the world whose lives have been saved and enriched by his work.
