Ayat

O you who believe! save yourselves and your families from a fire whose fuel is men and stones; over it are angels stern and strong, they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, and do as they are commanded. [66:6]

BlackBerry Guardian Adds New Layer of Security in BlackBerry World

IMG_20140224_104440

Ever the champion of security, BlackBerry has taken things one step further by integrating BlackBerry Guardian into BlackBerry World and thereby assuring customers that the apps they are downloading are perfectly safe to have on their devices.

With BlackBerry Guardian, the smart phone company has added another level of security that will work at preventing apps in BlackBerry World that are fraudulent in nature.

You will know an app has passed the added security measures by the new two new logos the company has placed in an app’s description, which you can see above.

In order to provide a stringent level of protection for customers, BlackBerry’s multi-layered strategy focuses on innovative scanning techniques, internal analysis and working with industry-leading third-party anti-malware vendors. A critical part of this strategy is the BlackBerry Guardian program, which uses a combination of automated and manual analysis to comprehensively vet apps prior to them being available in our storefront. Apps are also routinely evaluated after submission into BlackBerry World to help ensure that customers remain protected from malware and privacy infringing issues. If we identify an app that doesn’t meet our security and privacy specifications, we investigate and take whatever action is needed to help protect BlackBerry customers. [Source]

Mobile security was in the headlines recently when several app developers were trying to cash in on the recent Flappy Bird drama by releasing apps that made attempts at stealing information from its users.  It’s comforting to know that BlackBerry is taking steps to insure that its users will be safer from the more nefarious applications and developers in the world.

Don’t Install Ad-Aware Anti Virus !

I recently installed Ad-Aware Anti Virus to check about any spyware installed on my laptop. I chose Ad-Aware because it was the most downloaded AV on Download.com and also it had good reviews. The installation took a long time because it downloaded files during the installation, also it took long time to scan my HDD, after the scan it reported 7 infected files, all those files were patches except 1 which was the PST of my outlook.

The default option was quarantine, definitely I would not like to quarantine my PST so I chose disinfect for all files. The operation completed and it deleted 6 files other than the PST. As I had not chosen deletion and it didn’t ask me before deleting thus I immediately checked my PST file, it was still there so a sigh of relief. I proceed with my other work and when I restarted my Laptop, poof! The PST was gone!

Upon investigation it was found that Ad-Aware setup the deletion of the PST file upon restart. Well I tried to recover my PST using Recuva File Recovery, it informed me that the file is in poor state because a windows log file has already over written it. Anyway still it recovered the PST but it was corrupt and outlook was unable to open it.

Then for repairing the PST I used How to repair your Outlook personal folder file (.pst), and it repaired the PST. I opened it in outlook, there were some additional folders created under Lost and Found, rest of the emails were still intact thus fortunately I was able to get my emails back.

It took me several hours to complete the above process. Ad-Aware should have asked for my permission before deleting an important file like PST thus I wont recommend anyone to install it.

How to display AccuWeather information on the OS 10.2.1 clock

One of the applications that I use on a daily basis, and I’m sure you all do, is the Clock application. Using the multi-alarm feature I set myself reminders or use it as my wake-up call for work in the morning.

One of the new features in OS 10.2.1 is that the Clock app now includes AccuWeather information. This convenient feature lets you know first thing in the morning when you silence your alarm how to dress and whether you need an umbrella when you leave for work.
