TAYAMMUM In the Quran & the Hadiths

The Quran says O You who believe! When you prepare for prayer, wash your faces & your hands (& arms) to the elbows; Rub your heads (with water) & (wash) your feet to the ankles. If you are in a state of ceremonial impurity, bathe your whole body. But if you are ill, or in a journey or one of you comes from offices of nature or you have been in contact with women. And you find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, & rub therewith your faces & hands. Allah does not wish to place you in a difficulty. But to make you clean & to complete his favour to you that you may be grateful.

Holy Quran
Chapter Al Maidah 5:6

Commentary  Abdullah Yusuf Ali
These are the essentials of wudu or ablutions preparatory to prayers. Viz:

  • To bathe the whole face in water
  • Both hands & arms to the elbows, with
  • A little rubbing of the head with water (as the head is usually protected & comparatively clean)
  • The bathing of the feet to the ankles.

In addition, following the practice of the Prophet (saws), it is usual first to wash the mouth, the throat & the nose before proceeding with the face.

Ritual impurity arises from sex pollution

Tayammum or washing with clean sand or earth where water is not available. I take it that this substitute is permissible both for wudu & for a full bath in the circumstances mentioned.

Hadiths
Narrated Ammar bin Yasir (Rali) : I said to Umar bin Al Khattab (Rali), Remember that you & I (became Junub while both of us) were together on a journey & you didnt offer Salat (prayer) but I rolled myself on the ground & offered Salat (prayer)?  I informed the Prophet (saws) about it & he said, It would have been sufficient for you to do like this. The Prophet (saws) then stroked lightly the earth with his hands & then blew off the dust & passed his hands over his face & hands.

Narrated Abu Juhaim Al-Ansari (Rali) : The Prophet (saws) came from the direction of Bir Jamal. A man met him & greeted him. But he did not return back the greeting till he went to a (mud) wall & rubbed his hands & his face with its dust (performed Tayammum) & returned back the greeting.
