Five Tip Friday – BlackBerry 10 Personalization Tips

Happy Friday #TeamBlackBerry!

To kick off the weekend, here are five different ways you can personalize your BlackBerry 10 device.

For those using a BlackBerry OS 6 or 7 device such as the BlackBerry Bold 9900, check out our BlackBerry OS smartphone personalization tips post for tips that apply to you!

Give your device a nickname and set up a lock screen message

Follow the steps below to set a nickname on your BlackBerry 10 device so it’s easy to identify on a Wi-Fi network or when sharing content with other devices.

  1. On the home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen
  2. Tap Settings followed by About
  3. Enter the new name for your device in the Device Name field

After giving your device a nickname, set a lock screen message.

  1. On the home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen
  2. Tap Settings followed by Display
  3. Enter your desired message in the Message displayed on locked screen fields

Including an alternate phone number in you lock screen message is a great way to allow someone to contact you if you lose your device.

Secure and find your device using BlackBerry Protect

I encourage everyone I know to turn on BlackBerry Protect. BlackBerry Protect will help you locate your device in the event you’ve misplaced it.

  1. On the home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen
  2. Tap Settings followed by BlackBerry Protect
  3. Set the BlackBerry Protect switch to On

Organize your home screen

To move icons around, tap and hold any icon until it starts pulsing. When this starts to occur, drag it to the new location and release your finger. Hold the icon to the left or right edge to move it to a new panel. To stop moving icons, tap anywhere on the screen.

To create a folder, drag one icon on top of another. To move an icon out of a folder, open the folder and tap and drag the desired icon onto the blue banner that appears along the bottom of your screen. If you need to rename the folder in the future, open it followed by holding the folder name with your thumb for a moment.

Customize your display settings

Setting a new wallpaper

Whenever you are viewing a picture you would like to set as your wallpaper, tap the action key followed by Set As and select Wallpaper. Keep in mind that you’ll need to ensure the picture is saved to your device first.

For example, let’s say you are viewing a picture on a website and you would like to use it as your wallpaper. All you need to do is tap and hold the picture and select Save Image. After doing this, open the picture from your Downloads list and complete the steps above to set the picture as your new wallpaper.

Change the font size

To make text bigger, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Settings app and tap Display
  2. In the Font Size drop-down list, tap the size of font that you want to use

Set up one-touch voice mail

Your BlackBerry can remember your voice mail password, allowing you to have one-touch access to your voice mail box. To set up one-touch voice mail, open the Phone app, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Settings. Tap Voice mail followed by entering your voice mail access number and password. If you don’t know your voice mail access number, contact your wireless provider.
