The Best Services for Sending Large Files over the Internet

If you have to share a large file with someone over the Internet, there are generally two options – you can either put the file in an email message as an attachment or, if the file is too big to fit inside email, you can upload it to an file hosting service and then share the download links with the recipient.

Share Large Files Online - Comparison Table

Web email services like Gmail and Outlook allow you to send files up to 25 MB in size. For sending even bigger files, you can use a file-splitting utility like HJ-Split that will break the large file into smaller chunks of 25 MB each and you can send these in separate email messages. The recipient can download and join these parts to restore the original file.

You can use online storage services like Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive for sending really big files. Microsoft OneDrive lets you upload single files up to 2 GB in size while the individual size limit is 1 TB (yes 1000 GB) in the case of Google Drive. For even bigger files, you can use Dropbox – here the files have no size limit if you upload them to Dropbox through the desktop application.

There’s also WeTransfer — a freemium web app that lets you send files up to 2 GB in size from the browser. You don’t have to register for the service and all it asks for is the recipient’s email address. The uploaded file stays on the server for 7 days.

Also see: How to password-protect files

All the options discussed above have one thing in common – you have to upload your files to the Internet before someone can download them.

If you would like to send a file directly to someone without having to upload it anywhere, JustBeamIt is a good option. This is peer-to-peer app meaning the file transfers happen between your computer and the recipient’s computer directly. You can drag and drop a file on to the JustBeamIt website and it will instantly create a shareable link. When someone clicks this link, the file will begin to download on their machine directly from your computer.

Infinit is another impressive desktop application that also uses peer to peer file transfer and it allows you to send files of virtually any size to anyone. All you have to do is drag the file on to the Infinit app, choose any recipient from your contacts and the transfer will begin once they accept the incoming file request.

Infinit is available for both Mac and Windows and is probably the easiest way to send files big and small. It supports resumable downloads meaning if the Internet connection breaks during the file transfer, the app will pick up from where it left off after the connection is re-established. If you are sending files to another computers on the same network, Infinit uses your local area network and thus the transfers happen extremely fast.

That said, the sender and the recipient would need to install the Infinit app to use peer-to-peer transfer. Also, it is currently not possible to send files from the desktop to mobile devices.

The popular Skype app can also be used for sending documents, photos, videos and other large files of any format to your Skype contacts. Just initiate a chat session or a audio / video call with a contact and choose the Send File option to initiate a transfer. The service imposes no limit to the size or number of the files you can send or receive using Skype and since it is peer-to-peer, no centralized server is needed for the file transfer.

Five Tip Friday – BlackBerry 10.2.1 Calendar Tips

FTF-1021-Cal-Glance

In this week’s installment of Five Tip Friday here are five must-know BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2.1 calendar tips.

Don’t forget to leave a comment and let me know if you have a question or topic suggestion :)

Subscribe to a public calendar (ICS)

Did you know that you can subscribe to an iCalShare (ICS) calendar? I use this to add schedules from my favorite teams so I always know whenever they are playing.

  1. On the home screen swipe down from the top of the screen
  2. Tap FTF-1021-Cal-Settings Settings > Accounts > FTF-1021-Cal-ICSAdd > Subscribed Calendar
  3. In the Calendar Name field, enter a name for the calendar
  4. In the Server Address field, enter the address of the public calendar in ICS format
  5. Tap Done

Running late? Send an “I will be late” message

If you attend a lot of meetings you are going to love this feature! Instead of keeping people waiting, send a note to the meeting organizer, or to everyone on the invite, and let them know just how late you’re going to be.

  1. Open the event, either from the calendar app or from the event reminder
  2. Tap FTF-1021-Cal-3dot > FTF-1021-Cal-Late
  3. In the dialog box, move the slider to indicate how late you will be
  4. Tap Email All or Email Organizer

Easily add your conference details to meeting invitations

If you host a lot of meetings, this must-know feature makes adding your conference call details to a new invitation a breeze. Best of all, you can add different conference options in case you use multiple providers.

FTF-1021-Cal-BridgeInfo

  1. In the calendar app, swipe down from the top of the screen
  2. Tap FTF-1021-Cal-Settings Settings > Mobile Conferencing > FTF-1021-Cal-Bridge
  3. Enter the conference call bridge information, such as phone numbers and access codes
  4. Tap Save

The next time you set up a meeting, you can add the conference/bridge information by tapping the calendar details and selecting a previous conference, or you can add a new bridge setting.

Quickly create a follow-up meeting with previous details

Didn’t conquer everything you needed to do in a particular meeting? Use this tip to quickly create a follow-up meeting that includes meeting details such as the participants, subject, and notes from the original event. You can create follow-up meetings from past and future calendar events as well.

  1. Open a calendar event
  2. Tap FTF-1021-Cal-3dot > FTF-1021-Cal-Follow
  3. Enter the information for the follow-up meeting
  4. Tap Save

Change how your calendar appears

If you find yourself constantly changing your calendar views, consider changing your default view using the following steps. You can also customize your working hours, what day the week starts on, as well turning on or off one of my favorite calendar features—growing numbers that make it easy to see what days you are busy. To see an example of growing numbers, check out the last two screenshots in this post.

  1. In the calendar app, swipe down from the top of the screen
  2. Tap FTF-1021-Cal-Settings Settings > General
    • To change the view (day, week, or month) that you see when you open the calendar, in the Default Calendar View drop-down list, tap a view
    • To change the day that the week starts on, in the First Day of the Week drop-down list, tap an option
    • To change your working hours, in the Working Hours section, in the Start and End drop-down lists, tap an option
    • To use growing numbers to indicate the busyness of a day, set the Growing Numbers switch to On

Bonus—white or black background? You decide!

Using a BlackBerry Z30 or Q10? Because your device has an OLED screen you can optionally use a dark background within the calendar that helps conserve battery life. Try switching back and forth a few times to decide what option you prefer.

FTF-1021-Cal-GrowBlack

  1. In the calendar app, swipe down form the top of the screen
  2. Tap FTF-1021-Cal-Settings Settings > General
  3. To use a Dark Background set the switch to On

After changing this setting, close and re-open the calendar to see the new background color.

FTF-1021-Cal-GrowWhite

BPainter Pro by HSU TING YU

I actually discovered this application through a Twitter recommendation and I could not be more pleased. While I am artistically challenged there is nothing like an easy to use native BlackBerry 10drawing application to get the creative juices flowing. The pro version, offers a smooth drawing path, no ads, ability to search and select Flikr images as backgrounds, BlackBerry Express Support and a variety of basic drawing functions. The full version will set you back $1.99 but there is a free version available to try out as well.

Easy2Sync for Outlook Business Edition v5.3-DOA

Image
Easy2Sync for Outlook Business Edition v5.3-DOA | 15 Mb
When you take your laptop with you on a business trip, or work on your home computer on weekends, your Outlook information gets out of sync. Easy2Sync for Outlook ensures that you'll have the latest e-mails on all of your computers, automatically.
Secure sync
Easy2Sync was designed for security. It contains rules for all possible special cases. For example if you change the same contact on both sides differently, Easy2Sync for Outlook will detect this and warn you. It even contains fixes for problems of certain Outlook and Exchange versions. And the respective workarounds, whenever possible.
Take control of the sync...
You can configure how you want to synchronize your computers. If you value your data very highly, too, you might want to have more control over the sync process. Easy2Sync for Outlook can ask for confirmations for its planned actions on three different levels. You can review these actions for predefined groups, a list or each item individually.
...or do a completely automatic sync
By default Easy2Sync asks only in conflict cases for a confirmation (except during the first sync). Everything else is done automatically. And even the conflict cases can be automated. A completely automatic start is also possible.
Easy2Sync sorts it out
With Easy2Sync you don't have worry about the details. You can write a new e-mail on one laptop, receive the new mails on the desktop and modify or delete a contact on the laptop one again. Easy2Sync for Outlook detects all this during the next sync and synchronizes each change automatically to the respective other computer. For each e-mail, each contact, etc. it will decide automatically and individually in which direction it should be synchronized.

"I dream I'm floating on the surface of my own life. Watching it unfold. Observing it. I'm the outsider looking in."

iShrink by DevPDA.net

The developer behind this first application claimed he had a free hour so he made a simple app. The result is this URL generator for BlackBerry 10. If you have ever wanted to shrink website links to post to your social networks without going over the character count then this will help you to accomplish that task. It's fast, easy to use, and supports various servers including Bitly.com, Google, and Tinyurl. All you have to do is download the plugin for the server you wish to use, insert the link, and it does the rest. As it is integrated into the framework you can not only share the link but open the link from the browser right into the application as well. This handy Built for BlackBerry tool is free to download and is certainly one I will be taking advantage of and you should do the same as well.

HIJAAB FOR WOMEN

Most Common Questions asked by Non-Muslims

HIJAAB FOR WOMEN

Question:
Why does Islam degrade women by keeping them behind the veil?
Answer:

The status of women in Islam is often the target of attacks in the secular media.  The ‘hijab’ or the Islamic dress is cited by many as an example of the ‘subjugation’ of women under Islamic law.  Before we analyze the reasoning behind the religiously mandated ‘hijab’, let us first study the status of women in societies before the advent of Islam
1.  In the past women were degraded and used as objects of lust
The following examples from history amply illustrate the fact that the status of women in earlier civilizations was very low to the extent that they were denied basic human dignity:

1. Babylonian Civilization:
The women were degraded and were denied all rights under the Babylonian law. If a man murdered a woman, instead of him being punished, his wife was put to death.
2. Greek Civilization:
Greek Civilization is considered the most glorious of all ancient civilizations. Under this very ‘glorious’ system, women were deprived of all rights and were looked down upon. In Greek mythology, an ‘imaginary woman’ called ‘Pandora’ is the root cause of misfortune of human beings. The Greeks considered women to be subhuman and inferior to men.  Though chastity of women was precious, and women were held in high esteem, the Greeks were later overwhelmed by ego and sexual perversions. Prostitution became a regular practice amongst all classes of Greek society.
3. Roman Civilization:
When Roman Civilization was at the zenith of its ‘glory’, a man even had the right to take the life of his wife. Prostitution and nudity were common amongst the Romans.
4. Egyptian Civilization:
The Egyptian considered women evil and as a sign of a devil.
5. Pre-Islamic Arabia:
Before Islam spread in Arabia, the Arabs looked down upon women and very often when a female child was born, she was buried alive.

2. Islam uplifted women and gave them equality and expects them to maintain their status.
Islam uplifted the status of women and granted them their just rights 1400 years ago. Islam expects women to maintain their status.
Hijab for men
People usually only discuss ‘hijab’ in the context of women. However, in the Glorious Qur’an, Allah (swt) first mentions ‘hijab’ for men before ‘hijab’ for the women. The Qur’an mentions in Surah Noor:
“Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do.”
            [Al-Qur’an 24:30]
The moment a man looks at a woman and if any brazen or unashamed thought comes to his mind, he should lower his gaze.

Hijab for women.
The next verse of Surah Noor, says:
“ And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons...”
            [Al-Qur’an 24:31]
3.  Six criteria for Hijab.
According to Qur’an and Sunnah there are basically six criteria for observing hijab:
1. Extent:
The first criterion is the extent of the body that should be covered. This is different for men and women. The extent of covering obligatory on the male is to cover the body at least from the navel to the knees. For women, the  extent of covering obligatory is to cover the complete body except the face and the hands upto the wrist. If they wish to, they can cover even these parts of the body. Some scholars of Islam insist that the face and the hands are part of the obligatory extent of ‘hijab’.
1. All the remaining five criteria are the same for men and women.
2. The clothes worn should be loose and should not reveal the figure.
3. The clothes worn should not be transparent such that one can see through them.
4. The clothes worn should not be so glamorous as to attract the opposite sex.
5. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the opposite sex.
6. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the unbelievers i.e. they should not wear     clothes that are specifically identities or symbols of the unbelievers’ religions.
4. Hijab includes conduct and behaviour among other things
Complete ‘hijab’, besides the six criteria of clothing, also includes the moral conduct, behaviour, attitude and intention of the individual. A person only fulfilling the criteria of ‘hijab’ of the clothes is observing ‘hijab’ in a limited sense. ‘Hijab’ of the clothes should be accompanied by ‘hijab’ of the eyes, ‘hijab’ of the heart, ‘hijab’ of thought and ‘hijab’ of intention. It also includes the way a person walks, the way a person talks, the way he behaves, etc.

5. Hijab prevents molestation
The reason why Hijab is prescribed for women is mentioned in the Qur’an in the following verses of Surah Al-Ahzab:
“O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad); that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
            [Al-Qur’an 33:59]
The Qur’an says that Hijab has been prescribed for the women so that they are recognized as modest women and this will also prevent them from being molested.
6. Example of twin sisters
Suppose two sisters who are twins, and who are equally beautiful, walk down the street. One of them is attired in the Islamic hijab i.e. the complete body is covered, except for the face and the hands up to the wrists.  The other sister is wearing western clothes, a mini skirt or shorts. Just around the corner there is a hooligan or ruffian who is waiting for a catch, to tease a girl. Whom will he tease? The girl wearing the Islamic Hijab or the girl wearing the skirt or the mini? Naturally he will tease the girl wearing the skirt or the mini. Such dresses are an indirect invitation to the opposite sex for teasing and molestation. The Qur’an rightly says that hijab prevents women from being molested.
7. Capital punishment for the rapists
Under the Islamic shariah, a man convicted of having raped a woman, is given capital punishment.  Many are astonished at this ‘harsh’ sentence. Some even say that Islam is a ruthless, barbaric religion!  I have asked a simple question to hundreds of non-Muslim men. Suppose, God forbid, someone rapes your wife, your mother or your sister. You are made the judge and the rapist is brought in front of you. What punishment would you give him? All of them said they would put him to death. Some went to the extent of saying they would torture him to death. To them I ask, if someone rapes your wife or your mother you want to put him to death. But if the same crime is committed on somebody else’s wife or daughter you say capital punishment is barbaric.  Why should there be double standards?
8. Western society falsely claims to have uplifted women
Western talk of women’s liberalization is nothing but a disguised form of exploitation of her body, degradation of her soul, and deprivation of her honour. Western society claims to have ‘uplifted’ women. On the contrary it has actually degraded them to the status of concubines, mistresses and society butterflies who are mere tools in the hands of pleasure seekers and sex marketeers, hidden behind the colourful screen of ‘art’ and ‘culture’.

9. USA has one of the highest rates of rape
United States of America is supposed to be one of the most advanced countries of the world. It also has one of the highest rates of rape in any country in the world. According to a FBI report, in the year 1990, every day on an average 1756 cases of rape were committed in U.S.A alone. Later another report said that on an average everyday 1900 cases of rapes are committed in USA. The year was not mentioned. May be it was 1992 or 1993. May be the Americans got ‘bolder’ in the following years.
Consider a scenario where the Islamic hijab is followed in America. Whenever a man looks at a woman and any brazen or unashamed thought comes to his mind, he lowers his gaze. Every woman wears the Islamic hijab, that is the complete body is covered except the face and the hands upto the wrist. After this if any man commits rape he is given capital punishment. I ask you, in such a scenario, will the rate of rape in America increase, will it remain the same, or will it decrease?
10. Implementation of Islamic Shariah will reduce the rate of rapes
Naturally as soon as Islamic Shariah is implemented positive results will be inevitable. If Islamic Shariah is implemented in any part of the world, whether it is America or Europe, society will breathe easier. Hijab does not degrade a woman but uplifts a woman and protects her modesty and chastity.

Marrying women from the People of the Book

QUERIES ON ISLAM

Marrying women from the People of the Book

Question: Can a Muslim man marry a Christian or a Jew? Please explain.

-Sheikh Tahir tahir103@rediffmail.com

It is permissible for a Muslim man to marry a woman from the People of the Book (i.e. the Jews and the Christians), only if they fulfill certain criteria. Allah (swt) says:

“And (Lawful in marriage are) chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you…”

[Surah Al-Maidah 5:5]

Based on the above verse, most of the scholars say that a Muslim man can marry any woman who is a Jew or a Christian. On the other hand, if we read the Qur’an as a whole, Allah (swt) also says that Muslims are not allowed to marry Mushriks i.e. people who associate partners with Allah (swt).

“And do not marry Mushrik (polytheistic) women until they believe. And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist, even though she might please you.”

[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:221]

Moreover, we find that the Jews and the Christians too associate partners with Allah (swt). Says Allah (swt) in the Glorious Qur’an:

“They (Jews and the Christians) have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah, and (also) the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.” [Surah At-Tawbah 9:31]

The Christians, who claim that Jesus (pbuh) is God as well as the Son of God, insist on the supposed divinity of Jesus (pbuh) and worship him as such.

“They have certainly disbelieved who say, “Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary” while the Messiah has said, “O children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Indeed he who associates other with Allah – Allah has forbidden him paradise and his refuge is the fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.” [Surah Al-Maidah 5:72]

From the above-mentioned verses and many such verses of the Qur'an, it is very clear that almost all the present day Jews and the Christians are committing shirk by joining partners with Allah (swt).

Apparently, it appears to be a “contradiction” in the Qur’an, since at one place Allah (swt) forbids Muslims from marrying Mushriks, whereas at another place He allows Muslim men to marry women from the Jews and the Christians, most of who as per the Qur'anic narrations are Mushriks too i.e. those who associate partners with Allah (swt).

In another verse of the Glorious Qur’an, Allah (swt) conciliates all the above verses by informing us that among the Jews and the Christians there are also people who are true believers i.e. they believe in only one God and do not associate partners with Allah (swt). It says,

“Among them (Jews and the Christians) are believers but most of them are defiantly disobedient.” [Surah Ali Imran 3:110]

Therefore, according to me, Muslim men are permitted to marry only those women from the People of the Book (i.e. the Jews and the Christians) who are chaste as well as who do not commit shirk i.e. those who do not believe in trinity and Jesus’ (pbuh) divinity. And Allah Knows the Best.

Only a few people know that I am part of Genius Book of World Records, in 2007 when Siemens MN merged Nokia Net to make NSN, Nokia had association with Panda.org (WWF), as NSN employee I was able to register to Panda.org, there was some competition going on in which one had to answer environment related questions, I topped in MEA region and later I was invited by WWF to be part of World's Largest Tiger Mosaic, the  two-storey-high photo mosaic was created from personal photos of nearly 25,000 tiger lovers from at least 146 countries and I was one of them (representing Pakistan, although I had nothing to do with tigers). 35 organizations working to save wild tigers prepared that, they succeeded in whatever they wanted to achieve and I got myself in World Records
