The Kingdoms largest Zoo, first formed in 1957, was originally a small-scale affair, consisting of animals presented as gifts to the first three kings of the Kingdom. In 1987, a new and entirely refurbished zoo was opened. The new zoo was designed to provide the animals with room to move and suitable places to rest. Today it contains some 40 species, including bears, birds of prey, camels, elephants, hyenas, gazelles, leopards, lamas, lions, monkeys, rhinoceroses, tigers and a number of reptiles. There is a small train that runs through the zoo. Schools, compounds and other organizations often run trips to the zoo.
Inspite of the hot weather, Riyadh Zoo is surprisingly quite good and its a treat for children specially. While visiting, it would be a good idea to wear caps/hats for prevention from sun, there are canteens available inside the zoo thus you can buy snacks and drinks. The zoo is quite big thus it would be better to wear comfortable shoes.
