When was the last time you backed up your BlackBerry 10 device? If you can’t remember, or don’t know how to back up your device, here’s a quick overview of how to do it! Before we begin, if you aren’t currently doing a regular backup of your device, I would strongly recommend that you do. Personally, I make a point of backing up my device monthly and, best of all, BlackBerry Link does this for me automatically thanks for the scheduled backup feature. Let’s get started! Install & setup BlackBerry Link If you don’t have it already, download BlackBerry Link and install it on your PC. To do this, visit the BlackBerry Link website and click Download for PC. After the download has finished, double click on the BlackBerry Link installation file and follow the instructions to install BlackBerry Link. When installation is complete, open BlackBerry Link and plug in your device using a USB cable. If you have a device password, enter it when prompted, at which point you’ll be shown the Set up your new device screen. Within this screen, enter your desired device name, i.e. MyLeap and select one of the following options: - Manage this device with BlackBerry Link – If selected, BlackBerry Link will remember your device and preferences such as your backup schedule. If this is your PC, select this option.
- Automatically import the camera photos taken on this device – If checked, any photos taken using your device will be copied to your PC
- This is a one-time connection; do not manage this device with BlackBerry Link – If you are using someone else’s PC temporarily consider selecting this option which prevents BlackBerry Link from remembering your device.
After selecting your desired option click Start Using My Device which will complete the setup process. Backing up your BlackBerry 10 device Provided you have setup your device, backing it up and setting a backup schedule is really easy, here’s how to do it. - Connect your device using a USB cable to your PC
- Note: Backups cannot be completed using a Wi-Fi connection only, a USB connection is required
- Along the left, select your device, i.e. TysClassic
- Select Back Up & Restore
- Select your desired Backup Type
- Quick Backup – Does not include media files or application installation files
- Full Backup – A complete backup of your device
- Custom Backup – Select which data is backed up specifically
- Within Automatically back up my device select your desired backup frequency
- Click Back Up Device
When the backup process is complete you’ll be shown the Back Up & Restore settings screen at which point you can disconnect your device. Assuming you enabled the Automatically back up my device option, the next time you connect your device, (depending on the option you selected) your device will be backed up automatically which is really convenient! After making a backup, if you need to restore it, select Restore Device followed by selecting the backup file you’d like to restore.
