| RIM posted a new commercial for the BlackBerry Bold 9930/9900 to their youtube account a few days ago, showing off the harmony of the touchscreen + physical keyboard experience on what they refer to as the "new" BlackBerry Bold. You can check out the video above. Personally, I'm LOVING that the iconic BlackBerry form factor now has a touchscreen. I use it all the time mixed in with my trackpad and keyboard use. I've tried going back to my touchscreen-less 9780, and now it just feels weird not to have it. That said, a few of my friends who have picked up the 9900 (including my gf), have mentioned on more than one occassion they wish they could turn the touchscreen off. I guess they're so used to not having a touchscreen that they're not really using it all that much so more than anything they find it gets in the way with accidental swiping. That option doesn't exist of course, but for those who can't stand a touchscreen the newly announced BlackBerry Curves don't have one. |

"Allah (mighty and sublime be He) says:
‘The first of his actions for which a servant of Allah will be held accountable on the Day of Resurrection will be his prayers.’ If they are in order, then he will have prospered and succeeded; and if they are wanting, then he will have failed and lost. If there is something defective in his obligatory prayers, the Lord (glorified and exalted be He) will say: ‘See if My servant has any supererogatory prayers with which may be completed that which was defective in his obligatory prayers.’ Then the rest of his actions will be judged in like fashion."
It was related by at-Tirmidhi (also by Abu Dawud, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah and Ahmad).

"Your Lord delights at a shepherd who, on the peak of a mountain crag, gives the call to prayer and prays. Then Allah (glorified and exalted be He) will say: ‘Look at this servant of Mine, he gives the call to prayer and performs the prayers; he is in awe of Me. I have forgiven My servant [his sins] and have admitted him to Paradise.’"
It was related by an-Nasa'i with a good chain of authorities.

The Messenger of Allah (may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) led the morning prayer for us at al-Hudaybiyah following rainfall during the night. When the Prophet (may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) finished, he faced the people and said to them: "Do you know what your Lord has said?" They said: "Allah and his Messenger know best." He said: "‘This morning one of my servants became a believer in Me and one a disbeliever. As for him who said: ‘We have been given rain by virtue of Allah and His mercy,’ that one is a believer in Me, a disbeliever in the stars (2); and as for him who said: ‘We have been given rain by such-and-such a star,’ that one is a disbeliever in Me, a believer in the stars.’"
(2) The pre-Islamic Arabs believed that rain was brought about by the movement of stars. This Hadith draws attention to the fact that whatever be the direct cause of such natural phenomena as rain, it is Allah the Almighty who is the Disposer of all things.
It is related by al-Bukhari (also by Malik and an-Nasa'i).

Near Field Communication - what is it and why should I care?

The future that Near Field Communications (NFC) promises is nothing short of astounding. However, the obstacles lying in the path of that future are just as great. NFC is honestly nothing new; as a technology, NFC has been around since 2004. In 2005, Cingular (now AT&T) installed NFC point of sale readers as a test in Philips Arena in Atlanta. They were confident that by 2010, over half of the wireless phones in the US would support NFC. Today, there are but a handful.
It's only in the recent past that NFC became something of a hot topic. As to why, I can't help but think that it has something to do with money. Mobile payments will be the driving force behind NFC adoption in Europe and North America. The other uses of NFC - Bluetooth pairing, smartcards, file sharing - just aren't important enough to design into a smartphone for the masses. At best, the features would seem gimmicky; at worst, unnecessary.
But paying for food; clothing; and Wal-Mart with your phone may very well become a thing. A great deal of the hardware required to do this is already in place; it's all thanks to that little chip that might be in your credit card right now.

On any given day I'm bombarded with e-mails. With the nonstop barrage of work that's piled on my desk some of the important ones will slip through the cracks. That's why I flag e-mail messages on my BlackBerry with follow-up reminders. They keep track of what warrants a reply or what needs to get done. I incorporate flags into my daily to do list at work but there are endless ways you can use them in your everyday life. Features differ depending if you're running on BIS or BES but we'll get to that later.

Text messaging using BlackBerry Messenger

So you want to use BlackBerry Messenger to send text messages, do you? I don't blame you. BBM is an excellent place for keeping up with the people you message most frequently. Chat threads are saved and easily continued. Contacts can be split into different categories like "work" and "family" and "Wednesday Night Bowling League." And I find it much easier to start a text conversation by opening BBM and tapping on a contact. To send that same message using the Messages app, I have to open the app; touch Compose Message; then Text; then type in the name of the contact; and press enter. Already, BlackBerry Messenger is looking like a great place to store my text messaging BBM Contacts.
When a BBM contacts messages you, you'll get the standard new BBM notification. Whether that message comes from an actual BBM message or from a text message doesn't matter. After linking your BBM contacts to a BlackBerry Contact or adding a text only contact to BBM, you'll be able to converse entirely with that most powerful of messaging applications, BlackBerry Messenger.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 Public Service Announcement: Don't Try Removing the MicroSD Card while the Battery is Inserted. Seriously!

OK. So as you probably have guessed, since unboxing the BlackBerry Bold 9900 I've been going non-stop putting the device through the ringer as I work on our CrackBerry review. We've already given our first impressions of this BlackBerry a few times over now (you know it's awesome!), so in CrackBerry fashion I'm making sure our full-out review is brimming with the nitty gritty details CrackBerry readers love.
Currently I'm in a bit of a pickle though, as I've done something apparently stupid.... I tried removing the MicroSD card from the Bold 9900 while the battery is still inserted. The location of the card slot is similar to that of the BlackBerry Bold 9780/9700 -- under the battery door below centered below the camera -- but on the 9900 this slot isn't angled like it is on the 9780/9700. So instead of the memory card nicely sliding out above an inserted battery, it slides out horizontally into the battery. And wouldn't you know it, but the battery has a perfect groove/indentation in it which the memory card slides into perfectly. So now I have a memory card wedged into the battery, and now I'm stuck. I need to either get the battery to pull out directly, or get the memory card slid back in fully so I can then get the battery out, but instead I'm just stuck here. Seriously, I've wasted over an hour now trying to get this resolved with no luck.
LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE... Don't try and remove the MicroSD Memory card from the BlackBerry Bold 9900 while the battery is inserted! Take the battery out. Then the card. Period. Watch the video for a good laugh. I'll update this post once I get this fixed... until them I'm still stuck with a wedged memory card/battery.

Quick Tip: Find contacts even faster in your address book

We all know that we can start typing a person's name in our BlackBerry address book to locate a contact. What about when you have several people with the same first name, or at the very least the same first letter? You could type in their first name and then scroll to the correct contact. While that doesn't usually take too much time, there is an even quicker way. Simply type in the contacts initals separated by a space. Now you have an even smaller list to select from or perhaps the exact contact you're looking for (very few people I know have the initials AZ). That's it!

A Closer Look at the NFC antenna battery door on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 (and reasoning why the new Torches do not have NFC)

Of the new BlackBerry 7 devices announced to date, the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 is the first and only one to offer NFC support. I did ask around at the BlackBerry 7 Fan Night as to why NFC didn't also make an appearance in the Torch 9810, 9850, 9860, and while I didn't get a 100% straight answer, between the partial answers and a closer look at the battery door on the Bold 9900, I feel there's an explanation here.
Back at BlackBerry World, when we first went hands-on with the BlackBerry Bold 9900, we weren't allowed to take off the device's battery door. It turns out there's more to the new Bold's battery door than just good looks. As you can see in the picture above, the Bold 9900's battery door actually contains the NFC antenna. When you clip the battery door onto the 9900, the antenna leads connect back to internal circuitry. Cool stuff. And not only does the Bold 9900's battery door look cool and weigh next to nothing, but the carbon weave glass also allows for the signals (both radio and NFC) to pass through easily.
So when it comes back to the new Torches not having NFC, I think part of the explanation here is simply that to enable NFC you need to ensure the overall hardware design supports it (not just the chipset/software) and that likely the 9810 and 9850/9860 designs were finalized without considertion for this (or it was considered, but the ultimate design they wanted to go with didn't allow for a well-placed NFC antenna and/or thin battery door without doing some structural redesign). You need to be able to get the NFC antenna in a good place where it's going to work. In other words, RIM could have put NFC into the Torch 9850/9860, but it would have meant altering the shape of the device to get it all working 100%, which they didn't want to do with these devices, especially on a device like the 9850/9860 where you can tell design and feel are paramount.
Historically RIM has often rolled out new features (WiFi, GPS, Camera, etc.) only on one device model first, so putting it only on one of the new BB7 devices announced isn't a total surprise. And if they are going to put it on one device first, it makes sense RIM would first introduce it on the BlackBerry Bold. Though we were told all future devices will have NFC. But with NFC really still in its infancy, I don't think it's that big of a deal not to have it on the Torch 9810 or Torch 9850/9860.

BlackBerry ID now appearing in an Options Menu near you

CrackBerry member Kryngle noticed today that a new choice has appeared under Options on his Storm 2. It looks like you can now set up your BlackBerry ID from this menu, including your name, screen name, username (email address), password and recovery question. This Storm is running OS 5, and I didn't see this option on my Bold 9700 on BB6. Anyone else see this update, and if so, what triggered it?

Throughout the day I used my BlackBerry in many ways for many different things. One of the reasons I love my BlackBerry is that is allows me to do what I need to in order to get things done efficiently. I'm a communicator - I need my email, SMS, phone, IM and not much more. I have my device setup the way I want it and make things work the way I need them to. We all have our devices setup in different ways that best suit our needs. Be it icon arrangement, themes, shortcuts, OS version or what have you, each and every device matches the needs of the user.
One of my favorite and most used tricks is a saved message search. Typically when I need to save an email on which I need to follow up, I simply leave it marked as unread in my inbox (on my device or in my email client) so I can get back to it later. I have a saved message search created on my BlackBerry that lets me easily find all of my unread messages so I know what needs to be done. Multiprotocol IM client imo beta now available for BlackBerry

Today imo has announced a beta version of their multiprotocol IM client for BlackBerry. The app is free to download and features multiple services including AIM, Yahoo!, Gtalk, Skype, Jabber, MSN and more. The company has had a web app for quite some time, but this is the first release for BlackBerry Smartphones. While it's still a bit rough around the edges, imo is a pretty decent client if you like the ability to use multiple IM services all in one place. There are plenty of features to keep most users happy, and pretty much all of the "big name" services are included. BlackBerry Bold 9900 Battery Life: Our Early Observations

I actually had all of this written up as part of the Hardware Analysis > Battery section of our upcoming full review of the BlackBerry Bold 9900, but decided it would serve better as a standalone post (the full review is long enough as it is) so I can just post the summary within the review and link back to it here for those who want the full details.
I've been charting my Bold 9900 device usage and battery life for five days, as have our own Adam Zeis, Bla1ze and even Miss CrackBerry, and the conclusion on our end so far is that the battery life overall is pretty solid and on par with expectation RIM relayed to us of getting a full day of use out of the battery. Between the four of us we had a pretty good spread of usage cases, from Miss CB being a fairly light user (a lot of
messaging, some phone calls, and some web browsing) to crazy 'ole Bla1ze being on his BlackBerry more than any normal person should, doing just about everything he can think of.
