Leaked OS 7.1.0.342 for the BlackBerry Bold 9900

clip_image001

OS 7.1.0.342 has leaked for the BlackBerry Bold 9900. This is an unofficial (leaked) OS, so while it's mostly safe to install, remember to use caution when updating your device. If you need help along the way, you can head into our help forums or check out some of our BlackBerry 101 articles including How to Install or Upgrade to a new OS or How to Upgrade Your BlackBerry OS Using App Loader. If you do install this OS, hit up the forums thread below for findings, fixes and more discussion.

*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

BlackBerry Wallet is now OS 7 compatible!

img_0850

All good things come to those who wait. It's been a long time coming folks, but I am happy to announce that BlackBerry Wallet is now OS 7 compatible! I used this app all the time on my other BlackBerry devices and was really missing it on my 9930. This handy app stores all sorts of sensitive data just like BlackBerry's Password Keeper application.

Features

  • Save time by automatically filling in forms with credit card information, billing addresses, shipping information and more
  • Use BlackBerry Wallet to store and retrieve reward program numbers and info
  • Enter and retrieve account info for logging into your favorite shopping websites
  • Advanced password security keeps your credit card and billing information protected
  • Add and retrieve gift card or loyalty program information to accumulate points, rewards

*If running Version 1.2.0.x, you will need to read the additional instructions in App World*

The only issue I've noticed is that the full card number does not display on the image like it did before. I'm curious if that's just a 9900/30 issue or are the other OS 7 devices seeing the same thing. You can download the latest version from BlackBerry App World now!

T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Torch 9810 OS 7.1 updates now available

clip_image001

After a few false starts, T-Mobile has now gone ahead and announced the official availability of BlackBerry 7.1 for both the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Torch 9810. With them officially supporting it now, they're making use of some of the great features built into BlackBerry 7.1:

The new BlackBerry OS 7.1 has the following features.

  • Wi-Fi Calling: Allows you to make calls over a Wi-Fi network. Does not support handoffs to cell network, so calls will drop when you leave the Wi-Fi coverage.
  • Mobile HotSpot/USB tethering: Allows you to connect up to five devices to the internet through your BlackBerry device.
  • Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS): A personalized emergency alert system designed to alert people of nearby threats or emergencies.
  • BBM Music: A new feature that lets you download 50 tracks when you sign up and up to 25 tracks per month.
  • Bing search: Device searches also uses Bing to provide additional search results.
  • BlackBerry Device Analyzer: Lets you perform diagnostic tests to check for errors or issues, which can help you resolve device problems without having to call Customer Care. Check out the What is the BlackBerry Device Analyzer to learn more.

You can check for updates right now on your devices or fire up desktop manager to grab the update. If you prefer downloadng it later and doing it yourself, you can grab the install files from the links below for OS 7.1.0.284.

Quick Tip: Updating your BlackBerry to a different carrier's OS? Make sure you delete BOTH vendor files

Post Type :

clip_image001

As I found out earlier this morning, installing another carrier's OS on your BlackBerry isn't as easy as downloading and deleting the vendor.xml file -- now you have to delete both vendor files. It seems that in one of the updates to BlackBerry Desktop Manager, the vendor.xml file is not only located in one folder, but two. In the past you simply had to delete the lone vendor file and you were well on your way to a clean install with either BlackBerry Desktop Manager or App Loader. Now however, you'll need to dive in a bit more before your PC will see the OS - keep reading and we'll tell you how to seek and destroy (ok, find and delete) those pesky vendor.xml files.

Opera Mini web browser now available in BlackBerry App World

clip_image001[4]

Opera Mini has long been the go-to secondary browser for many BlackBerry users, but until now, it was only available via direct download from Opera's site. Today Opera has announced that version 6.5.2 is now available as a free download from BlackBerry App World. While there are no major changes in this version, the browser does offer some different functionality over that of the native BlackBerry Browser, so if you haven't used it before you might want to check it out. Keep reading for the full press release then head to the link below to download.

The many faces of Shift+Delete on the BlackBerry keyboard

Post Type :

clip_image001

A year ago we discussed the Shift + Delete command - a new (at the time) feature of the BlackBerry OS that some people loved, some hated and some didn't even know existed. When typing away in BlackBerry Messenger, if you press Shift+Delete you will find your message is deleted.

Personally, I found the new feature to be annoying; as more often than not I pressed that key combination accidentally and deleted whatever I was trying to say. Prior to this key combination being added to the OS, if you pressed the Back key your message would be deleted - an option which many people used frequently. Now, when you press the Back button, you are returned to the main BBM screen and your message is saved as a draft. This is Handy in some cases, annoying in others. But hey, as long as you know what each function does, you can manage, right?

Well, let's make it a little more interesting. As I mentioned, in BBM, Shift+Delete will erase whatever you're typing, meaning, you have to retype the message from the beginning. This key combination will also erase the text field in the BlackBerry Browser. For example, if you're in the CrackBerry forums and you've chosen to reply to a thread, and quote a previous post, Shift+Delete will erase the entire text entry field -- the quoted post and your reply. That can be a real pain, especially if you've written a lengthy, well thought out response. However, in the Browser you can simply choose the menu key and paste the text back in; so instead of the combination being a delete command, it is instead a cut command. That's way handier than how BBM handles it, and I have to wonder why Research In Motion went in different directions with the same key combination. To make it slightly more confusing, Shift+Delete does nothing in SMS or email besides what the delete key normally does, which is erase one character at a time.

I don't mind the feature, and realize it could be useful for many people. I do believe, however, that it should be universal across the native apps. If I'm going to be accidentally deleting things, I'd like a way to put them back quickly and without re-typing the whole thought. Also, it would be nice if the function existed in other native apps such as SMS and email.

BlackBerry App World updated to version 3.1.1.21

clip_image001

Those who have a BlackBerry in hand may want to check and see if you have a new update available as RIM is pushing out version 3.1.1.21 of BlackBerry App World. While the version upgrade is rather small it does bring a few much-needed fixes.

Updated in v3.1.1.21

  • Alternate billing options shown in purchase confirmation screen
  • Review submission screen UI refresh
  • Bug fixes

If you aren't seeing the update just yet, hold off as it can take a few hours to push through the servers. Or if you like you can do the old "ALT RST" trick and see if that motivates your phone to serve up the new App World.
